Singapore in Style

When award space opened up on the world’s longest flight I jumped at the opportunity to book the trip. And, while I didn’t especially love Singapore as a destination, the trip was a ton of fun.

  • So, just how much is that ticket??

    Missing image

I’m sitting in the budget terminal of Singapore’s Changi airport this morning, getting ready to board a flight for a day trip up to Kuala Lampur. There are plenty of reasons I decided to do this as a last minute getaway – mostly because there are some fun airports and airlines to be had – […]

  • Searching for the soul of Singapore

    Missing image

Every city has a soul. A vibe. A heartbeat. There is a sort of unspoken, unwritten feeling that sits atop all the other bits. It can be seen and felt on the street, watching and interacting with people as they go about their business. Finding this soul of a city is usually pretty easy for […]

  • Foodie fun in Singapore

    Missing image

I lamented earlier that Singapore doesn’t seem to have much of a soul. Maybe that’s because they’ve been too busy working on their food. I managed to eat quite well during my stay (more than 3 meals/day) on a very limited budget thanks to some great options, both in the hawker centers and in stand-alone […]

  • In flight: Buzzing about on FireFly

    Missing image

I was bored in Singapore. Apparently that happens from time to time. I wasn’t going to take it lying down, however. I was determined to find something entertaining to do, and for me that usually means some sort of ridiculous travel-related event. The region is filled with LCCs and there are plenty of options for […]

  • Damn, the Petronas Towers are tall

    Missing image

I suppose this shouldn’t come as any surprise given that they were, for 6 years, the tallest buildings in the world. And, while I know that there are other things I probably should have tried to see during my day trip to Kuala Lampur, the Towers were easy to get to, easy to wander around […]

  • In flight: Taming Tiger Airways

    Missing image

In my efforts to explore the LCCs of SE Asia I did what I could to mix up my flights a bit. This meant picking a different carrier for my return from Kuala Lampur to Singapore and the fares and times suggested that my trip would be on Tiger Airways. Tiger is one third owned […]

  • In flight: Smooth as Silk with Thai

    Missing image

Booking my award flight on the non-stop Newark to Singapore flight was a huge win and opened up a ton of opportunities for me. Among them, I had to figure out how to get back home from Singapore within a relatively tight timeframe, and I was searching not too far out from my planned dates […]

  • In flight: Short-haul business class on Swiss

    Missing image

Continuing the long trek home from Singapore, I transferred in Rome from Thai Airways to Swiss for the last bit of the trip. First up was a couple hours with the short-haul product, flying from Rome to Zurich. Like pretty much all short-haul flights in Europe this one was just coach seating with the middle […]

  • Celebrating the arrival of Spring in Zurich

    Missing image

Got a five hour layover in Zurich?? That’s plenty of time to get out of the airport and in to downtown. When I made that trek a couple weeks ago it was a stunningly beautiful day, with blue skies and warm enough temperatures that seemingly the entire city was out celebrating the arrival of Spring. […]

  • In flight: Across the Pond on PrivatAir’s 737

    Missing image

Many warned me about the PrivatAir 737 operating as Swiss for the flight between Zurich and Newark. Beyond the geek factor of an all-business class config (my second such flight of this quick RTW trip) the product is actually not all that amazing. The seats are old and the IFE limited. Still, I wanted to […]
