Passengers flying in the premium WestJet Plus cabin on the carrier’s 737 fleet are getting an upgrade. The company previously announced plans to convert from a “euro-biz” blocked middle seat model to a proper product with larger seats on board. Today Recaro confirmed that it is the provider of those seats. The CL4710 seats will be installed on 10 737 MAX aircraft this year.
The Canadian airline selected the CL4710 for its business class on short and medium-haul routes. The business class seat features a variety of stowage compartments for personal belongings. A leg rest, which can be adjusted in length and angle to adapt to the needs of individual passengers, contributes to superb comfort. The seats can also be equipped with state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment systems.
Switching to a dedicated premium product rather than the blocked middle seat option delivers a significant improvement in passenger experience. Increased seat width, joining the pitch previously offered, brings the carrier closer to the Air Canada product it is competing with as well as that of US-based carriers.
It is also the latest step in the WestJet pivot of its primary business to a more full-service operation. While it is still considered a LCC the launch of Swoop, a ULCC arm, gives room for the parent WestJet operation to grow into the desired network-carrier role. As the 787s come online to expand the long-haul operation that transition will further grow. As recently unveiled the Dreamliner brings flat-bed business class, premium economy and a modern economy class to the operation. It is a significant shift from the current 767 long-haul operation. Upgrading the short-haul product to match that improved long-haul operation allows the carrier to better sell its premium products on a connecting market basis.
Economy upgrades, too
The economy class cabins on the 737 MAX will fly with the Recaro BL3520 seat. On WestJet’s new 787s the economy class cabin will feature the CL3710, the newer long-haul economy class product.
Recaro impressed us with its intelligent design and fast delivery times. Equipping the cabins of our new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and B737 MAX aircraft with these world-class seats, we are confident our guests will be impressed with the comfort and uncompromising quality of the CL3710 and BL3520 economy class seats and CL4710 business class seats. – Tim Croyle, Executive Vice-President of WestJet
The CL3710 is a solid long-haul economy offering and WestJet joins carriers such as Avianca, Singapore Airlines and Delta Air Lines in offering the product on its long-haul fleet.
