    there’s still a huge value in alliances. Let’s split the world into 3 major regions – Americas, EMEA, and AsiaPac. Any airline can have JVs covering 2 of those 3 inter-region paths. To cover all 3, you’ll need an alliance.

    Say you’re at UA pax based in USA, and trying to fly FRA-PVG. When there’s an alliance, you have a much larger incentive to keep your spend within the “walled garden” by flying either CA or LH on this route, and even willing to pay a small premium for this. Without an alliance, MU’s service will be of equal value.
