India’s dumbest policy decision is stupidly bowing to laissez faire purists by being extremely generous in their bilaterals with UAE+Qatar by simultaneously crippling home grown alternatives by insisting they need X amount of experience before long-haul, thus preventing any of them having any realistic chance of reaching sustainable long-haul presence before other forces eventually overwhelm them, regardless of whether Air India exists or not.

And the end result ? Making ME3, and Emirates in particular, the *de facto* international airline for the entire nation, with SQ and CX playing a similar but much smaller role, while simultaneously enabling an infinite supply of mutually-destructive fare wars from LCCs, founders with more ego than logic, and investors with more pipe dreams than Hyperloop. As we can all witness, even supposedly clear market leader IndiGo barely makes any profit whatsoever at the best of times.

How often does a nation’s stupidity end up placing their flagship long-haul scissor hub OUTSIDE of national borders, especially when the homegrown market has no economies of scale issues. Just think about it, Taiwan has population of 23million, constantly hampered geopolitically by PRC, has 2 sustainable long haul carriers (and of decent quality i might add), while India, a gargantuan nation of 1100million, is perpetually propping up one and letting alternatives implode.

Trying to pin all the blame on everyone’s favorite scapegoat Air India is eerily similar to AA fans constantly excusing ORD-Asia performance with their ever-shifting reasons – first was PEK slot hours, then 772 too F heavy so reconfig to more J fixes it, then it’s 772 itself too big so 788 will solve it, then 788 28J won’t work cuz Chinese airlines flooding capacity and trashing yields so we need 20J, now it’s doesn’t work at all due to zero proper feed until CZ moves to Daxing PKX – basically, never realizing there’s something more fundamentally at flawed than whatever they perceive as the next be-all-end-all solution, which so far all has failed to live up to any of the promises.

And i can already predict right here what their next excuse will be – CZ+MU simultaneously hubbing at PKX, which prevents either from reaching critical mass of a fortress hub. A “solution” for 2 pairs of US-China partnerships is a solution to none.
