Talking antenna tech on Thinkom’s TEK Talk

Ever wonder what’s involved with the antenna hardware that delivers inflight internet connectivity to your plane? There’s a lot going on “under the hood” and the technology chosen by the suppliers can have a significant impact on what passengers experience on board. Over the next couple years more than 1,600 planes will be fitted with Gogo‘s 2Ku system featuring a pair of antennae from Thinkom. A few months back I sat down with Thinkom’s CTO Bill Millroy to talk about some of the technologies and how it all works together to deliver bits and bytes to flights. The end result of that project was this series of five short videos on various topics related to connectivity.

We talk about how antenna technology will evolve, different frequency bands and TCO, among other things. We also spend time looking not just at what is available today, but also what is coming in the next 3-5 years and beyond.

Yes, they are marketing videos. But they’re also pretty reasonable when it comes to putting the content in context and not simply claiming Thinkom is best at everything. Give ’em a watch and learn a little something.
