Flight route planning

Planning a flight route is usually a relatively straightfoward process. Get the shortest path from A to B, within the scheme of the “highways in the sky” that air traffic control allows travel on. That works well for commercial flights, but private travel has a lot more leeway in their planning. Flying generally above the commercial traffic they can either go more direct to where they’re trying to get to, or in some cases, just have some fun in the air. I hate to think what the fuel bill was for these “trips.” (Link 1; Link 2)
