Finding great cash rates with Hotel Hustle

Not too long ago I introduced a feature on Hotel Hustle to identify great award rates. It was pointed out (rightfully) that these mostly cropped up when the paid rate was absurdly high for a property, not necessarily when the points required was especially low. To round out that offering I’ve added a great cash rates finder to the tool as well.

The Great Cash Rates page identifies search results where the price is more than 20% lower than any other result for that property in the prior 30 days. The difference may be due to seasonal shifts or other factors but with the total volume of searching I’ve found it a good starting place to hunt for better than normal rates. The map clears every night and starts anew, slowly building up content throughout the day.

I’ve also integrated the cash rates into the @HotelHustle twitter feed. Now it highlights both the great cash rates and the great award rates.

  1. You could probably adjust for seasonality by comparing it to the rate fluctuations of other area hotels – i.e. the hotel is normally in the highest quintile of hotels within 5 miles of it, but now it is in the middle quintile.

Not the easiest thing to code, of course, but could help refine what are actual great cash rates.
