The wedding we were at this weekend was in Miami Beach. The affordable flight home was from Palm Beach. It is a relatively easy drive on a Sunday so I wasn’t all that worried about it, especially with a $25 rental car one way. So we left the beach, headed north on I-95 with no real agenda other than eventually getting to PBI.
Just short of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport traffic came to a sudden halt. An accident a few miles ahead backed things up and the interstate was at a standstill. A quick look at the map suggested we could get around the accident by going around the airport so I pulled off the highway and on to the side road. What I did not expect was to see the tail of a 747 sticking up over the trees along the side of the road. Nor did I know that there was a small parking lot and spotters area on the southwest corner of the field, overlooking 10R. Figured that out pretty quickly as I pulled on to the perimeter road, though. And ended up with a solid view of the GA ramp, including Ed Force One hulking over everything else there.
The fence got in the way of a couple shots just based on the angle trying to get the side of the plane in view but, for the most part, it is a great little spot to sit out and spot if in the area.
We only stayed for a few minutes but it was completely worth the unexpected diversion.
